Cozumel
Cozumel is well known for it’s world class diving. If you are not a diver, the snorkeling is also excellent. Chankanaab National Park offers some of the finest shallow reef snorkeling in the world and is a great chance for non-divers to enjoy a vibrant reef with many species of tropical marine life. Experienced divers have the opportunity to explore the impressive walls of coral that run 100’ or more.
Cozumel has become a very popular port for Cruise Ships. This means that there is ample opportunity for great shopping and excellent restaurants. It also means that the prices here are higher than what you might pay on the mainland. Still, the island is worth seeing and spending some time exploring. Everything you need is easily accessible via an inexpensive cab ride. A great way to see the island is to rent a motor scooter. Scooters, rental cars and taxicabs are offered by several different companies and are easily available as you step off of the ferry. There are also tourist information booths that will provide you with a great map of the island and a directory of local services.
Cozumel is approximately 32 miles long. Most of the development is located on the leeward or western side of the island, but the eastern side, which faces the open ocean, is also worth exploring for small beach side restaurants and private coves. There are hardly any people here and the beaches are nice. If it is too windy they may not be so enjoyable, so check the weather and be flexible.
To get to Cozumel you must take a ferry from Playa del Carmen. Ferries run throughout the day and are scheduled to allow divers to arrive on the island in time for the morning or afternoon dive boats. The cost of the ferry is approximately $8.00 US (Subject to change) each way. There is a small discount for round trip purchase. The trip takes between 45 minutes and hour and can be very enjoyable with great views. It can also be a little rough, so remember, to keep your eyes on the horizon. Drinks (all kinds) and snacks are available on board for an additional fee. Click Here for Ferry Schedules
Diving in Cozumel is some of the finest in the world. There are many dive shops here and many divers go through. We believe that diving in Cozumel is best suited for the experienced diver because of its open depths and swift currents.
For this reason it is important to choose a reputable dive center. We have made a few recommendations below, but urge you to check each facility out on your own. How many people are allowed on boat? What is their arrangement with the local decompression chamber? What experience do their dive masters have? What are their emergency preparedness and lost diver plans? Your dive shop should be able to answer all of these questions off the top of their head. If you prefer to skip having to interview your dive shop in Cozumel, the local Akumal shops arrange guided day trips to the island as well. These are full day trips, usually done at about the same price that you could do it on your own.
Choosing to dive Cozumel via the local Akumal shops means that you will know your dive master and that they will know you. These guys are also very familiar with Cozumel dive facilities and sites. For more information on local Akumal Dive Shops, click here.
