Cancun and Playa del Carmen both offer a good selection of imported and national products at reasonable prices. Costco, Sam’s and Wal-mart each have locations in Cancun. Commercial Mexicana is national grocery chain that offers an excellent selection of local produce and other products. The prices here are very good. Commercial Mexicana is located just next to Costco. Between them you can find just about everything you would need including fresh produce, imported meats, beer, wine and other spirits, beach toys, snorkel equipment and clothing. The availability of products and the price difference are often worth the extra time involved if shopping prior to heading south to Akumal.
Directions to Cancun Costco and Commerical Mexicana (Approximate Drive time from airport 20 minutes) From the Cancun International Airport follow signs North – to Cancun (Centro). Continue north on Highway 307 for approximately 11 kilometers. When you reach the third PEMEX station you will turn LEFT onto Ave.Kabah which is marked on your left by a PEMEX Gas Station (You will see the green sign very clearly). On your right is the stick built replica of the first airport tower constructed at the Cancun Airport. Turn left, travel for approximately 2 kilometers. Costco will be on your right side, with Commercial Mexicana next to it and accessible through the parking lots.

Directions to Cancun Sam’s and Wal-Mart From Costco, Sam’s and Walmart is very easy to get to. Just prior to the Costco parking lot is Ave. Yaxchilan. Turn right onto Yaxchilan and follow for one and half kilometers. Sam's Club and Wal-Mart on your left.
Playa del Carmen
Sam’s and Wal-Mart also have brand new stores in Playa del Carmen. Commercial Mexicana has a new (2005) and very large store now located in Playa del Carmen. Chedraui, another national chain, has a large facility in Playa del Carmen, located just along the main highway and is easily accessible for travelers. For the best produce and a good selection of international products try DAC. This is a true “fruteria” with an excellent selection. (Click Here for map of Playa del Carmen)
Sam's Club Located along Highway 307, on the east side of the highway, Sam's Club is most easily accessed by north bound travelers who use the frontage road along the highway. When traveling north, as you approach Playa del Carmen, access the frontage road as you enter the Playa Car area. From here you will see Sam's Club and it's entrances easily.
Wal-Mart, located on Avenida 30, between Benito Juarez and Constituyentes.
Mega Commercial Mexico, located at the intersection of Constituyentes and Avenida 30.
Directions to Chedraui Highway 307, traveling south from Cancun, turn left into Playa at the second traffic light (Juarez). Take your first right (which comes up quickly) and follow for 3 blocks. Chedraui offers a good selection of staples and dry goods. There is a bakery, liquor and fresh produce.
Directions to DAC To find this open market, as you are entering Playa from the airport, turn left at the first traffic light off of highway 307 (Constituentes) Follow this road to the traffic light then turn left. You will find it part way up the block on your right. If you don't find what you are looking for be sure and ask. They have additional product available in the large coolers.
For fresh seafood, Playa has several great seafood markets that offer fresh fish and other seasonal seafoods. The best and easiest to find is Oceana. This is a large fresh seafood market that receives product every morning and every afternoon.
Directions to Oceana Oceana is located right along the highway on the right side as you are coming from Cancun. (Left if you are coming from Akumal) It is a large structure (kind of pink in color) and is easily spotted from the highway. To reach Oceana use the frontage or service road that runs parallel to the highway. This is easily accessible from the Juarez intersection (First stop light from Akumal, second if coming from Cancun). Oceana is located just to south of the Juarez intersetion. If you are traveling from Akumal you will double back along the service road. Open Monday – Saturday until 5:00 PM.
In Akumal, we have two principal grocery stores. The Super Chomak and The Mini Super “El Pueblito”. The Super Chomak is a small store but has everything you need. There are many imported products, diapers, baby food and a small pharmacy section. It can be expensive however and is best for picking up cold drink or snack. The Mini Super “El Pueblito” is a great alternative for simple things like cold beer and refrescos. There are national products here and very few imported goods.
Every Saturday we have the open fruit and vegetable market that sets up early in the morning. There is a nice produce and a good selection but be sure and do your shopping early. Many locals do there shopping here and the selection dwindles quickly.
Across the highway in the Akumal Pueblo you can always a limited selection of fruits and vegetables at the “Fruterias” of which there are two right along the main road, across from the water tower. There is also a “Tortillera” which sells fresh hot corn tortillas every morning except Sunday. The tortillera closes early to avoid the intense heat.
